Sustainable Forest Management should be a priority to African leaders

National Forest Policies (NFP) have been instrumental in India's forest conservation efforts. However, their impact has been limited due to several reasons, including the non-amendment of the Indian Forest Act Provisions of 1927. As a result, the NFP recommendations of 1952, 1988, and the National Forest Commission Report of 2006 have remained confined to academic discourses with little implementable public policy value. To create a sustainable future for our forests and the communities that depend on them, it is essential to align the Indian Forest Act Provisions with the nuances of NFP recommendations. The Disaster ( Management) Act 2005 has relevant provisions to address forest fires, but commensurate alignment with IFA is missing. It is time for us to take a closer look at the Indian Forest Act Provisions of 1927 and make necessary amendments to ensure that the NFP recommendations are implemented effectively on the ground.
