Fashioning communication Statements are not always made of speech. There are postures that speak, actions that announce, and even silences that make an impact. While clothes were mostly functional, sometimes denotative of class and counted on to make an entry, the Sapeurs of Congo used it to fight prejudice. To get attention – not to themselves, but to their dreams and aspirations. They dressed up as an act of defiance against subjugation, for respect, to be counted equal to their colonial masters. Sapeurs, as they are called today, are part of La Sape, French for ‘Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People.’ The tribe always fascinated me, resonated with me on many levels. And photographs of them – dandy peacocks – stark against adobe houses in arid slums. Nothing short of a movement today – with the followers now demanding government recognition – it had its roots in the 1920s when low-income men from Kinshasa and Brazzaville in Congo began to wear European attire. They would forego basic necessities to buy expensive labels and look dapper. Those who could afford it went to London or Paris to splurge on designer clothes. The movement has been gaining momentum over the years with women and now children too swelling the ranks. I met August from Congo during my travels through Africa last month. He was on his way to Paris. Of course, he was proud to be from the land of Sapeurs. Did they have an effect on him? He believed so; in fact, he believes every man and woman in Congo are inspired by them. Those who are not, must try to be. Laughs. More than the fashion or making a statement, August said that the Sapeurs are treated like celebrities in their communities. They are loved for the sheer joy – and colour – they brought into the everyday mundane. They were admired for taking a stand, being assertive and taking the lead in following dreams. August was a Sapeur.
