Great to see some recent news stories focusing on EV efficiency rather than just headline range! Todays news from #Mercedes on the vision EQXX efficiency record (https://lnkd.in/eecAC3YB) comes 2 weeks after #Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson outlined their "holy grail" efficiency target of 6.2mi/kWh (https://lnkd.in/eKeD7h_W). If the Gen1 Nissan Leaf could have boasted these kinds of efficiency figures it would have had an EPA range around 170 miles rather than its official range of up to 107 miles. About a 60% increase! Range anxiety is likely going to be with us for a long time due to infrastructure rollout; if not forever due to the physical limits of how frequently batteries can be rapidly charged without impacting their projected life. However, improvements in overall efficiency will allow vehicles to utilise smaller batteries to achieve the same range. This doesn't just reduce the amount of precious metals needed to deliver the battery itself; less battery means less overall weight. Less weight means less structure, smaller motors, smaller brakes, smaller wheels etc. etc. so the efficiency benefits come even more easily! Most importantly of all it also means less cost, making #EV tech more accessible to more people!

New year, new challenge! I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Chief Engineer EE Systems at Prodrive!

The tragedy of the Titan submersible disaster is only heightened when reading further into the background.   In the past I've been guilty of believing innovation to mean purely creating something entirely new or different to what's been done before. However, technological innovation and business success are not guaranteed just by purposely going against the grain.   Deep innovation often comes from having a thorough understanding of what has come before you, how things came to be a certain way and then innovating within these existing constraints.   Success of the business then relies not only on the maturity of the technology but also the strategy behind how to mature the technology. The 'move fast and break things' mantra has its place in certain spheres and at certain times but constant iteration without a higher level strategy is a risky approach to developing any technology but especially safety relevant technology.   Ultimately all of this becomes possible only within a culture that fosters the appropriate levels of honesty, accountability, and self-analysis.   #startup #culture #safety #innovation

I'm happy to share that I've recently joined the team at REE as Electrical Integration Manager to support the development of our fully x-by-wire corner, platform and vehicle technologies. Straight into the challenge of building the team that will be responsible for the design, development, integration and test of the electrical architecture and systems necessary to enable this innovative technology. As well as these immediately available roles, going forward there will be various opportunities available in electrical systems and integration, electrical distribution as well as test, calibration and validation.
