Asymmetric umbilical reflex in a patient with scoliosis. Explanation of Asymmetric Umbilical Reflex The umbilical reflex, also known as the abdominal reflex, is a neurological reflex that involves the contraction of the abdominal muscles when the skin around the umbilicus (belly button) is stimulated. In a normal response, the contraction of the abdominal muscles is symmetrical on both sides of the umbilicus. However, an asymmetric umbilical reflex indicates an abnormality in the neurological pathways. Significance & Association: An asymmetric umbilical reflex in a patient with scoliosis is a concerning finding as it suggests the presence of an underlying syrinx. A syrinx is a fluid-filled cavity within the spinal cord, which can cause a variety of neurological symptoms depending on its location and size. It is often associated with a Chiari malformation, which is a structural defect in the cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance and coordination.
