20 Teves - Maimonides - 1204 On this day in 1204 R’ Moshe Ben Maimon, better known as Maimonides or the Rambam, passed away, making today his yartzeit. He was born in Cordoba, Spain in 1135.  In 1148, the Beber’s took over Spain and forced all the Jews to convert, leave, or be killed.  Maimonides’s family left, moved about in Southern Spain for 10 years, and eventually settled in Morocco.  There he wrote the first of his three major works, his commentary to the Misha.   He then tried settling in the land of Israel but was driven out by the Crusaders who had ravaged the land at that time.  Egypt then became his home.  His scholarship was financially supported by his brother who was a successful merchant. After his brother’s tragic death at sea, Maimonides became a physician to support both his and his brother’s family. He rose to such heights in his field that he was appointed as court doctor to the Sultan Saladin.  The next of the Rambam’s monumental works was his magnum opus, the Mishna Torah, which was a 14 volume codification of the full spectrum of Jewish law and philosophy.  He wrote in the introduction that a Jew would now only need the 5 Books of Moshe and his work. He did not mean to replace the Talmud, but rather to have one encyclopedic work that had all the laws of the oral tradition neatly organized. Before the end of his life, he penned the Guide to the Perplexed, a philosophical work based on Aristotelian Philosophy. After he passed away on this day, his remains were taken to Israel and buried in the city of Tiberias.  Preorder or Sponsor the forthcoming Today In Jewish History book: https://lnkd.in/g8rFjtM5 Find out more: WhatsApp: bit.ly/WhatsAddMe iTunes: apple.co/2Vxv6kq Spotify: bit.ly/TIJHspot Alexa: amzn.to/2Js9r8hj . . . . . #jew #jewish #jewishart #jewishcommunity #jewishculture #jewishfood #jewishgirl #jewishhistory #jewishholidays #jewishlife #jewishnewyear #jewishpride #jews #judaism #kosher #love #neveragain #hebrew #shabbat #holocaust #shabbatshalom #israel #jerusalem
