Presidents Day is about honoring our founding fathers. But it's also a chance to recognize great leadership. Here are three lessons in leadership from OG influencers who rocked the powdered wigs and guarded the Constitution: 𝟭. 𝗕𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 & 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 The founding fathers embodied unwavering belief in their vision and demonstrated bravery against formidable odds. Lesson: Be bold and take risks. 𝟮. 𝗕𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 & 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 Leadership involves listening to different perspectives. The Founding Fathers understood the importance of: -debate -discussion -compromise All key to drafting the Constitution and establishing a new government. Lesson: Be open to different viewpoints. 𝟯. 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 The vision of the Founding Fathers were not limited to their personal interests. They fought for the rights and freedoms of all citizens. They thought beyond themselves. They shaped a greater good. Lesson: Create a vision people can get behind Just as our founding fathers shaped the nation. As business owners and leaders we need to embody their values of leadership. These principles are the backbone of building trust in the digital age. -- Today, our office is closed. We are taking the day to honor our founding fathers. Two years ago, we asked Chicago business leaders to publicly commit to advance racial equity by re-thinking business policies and practices one year after George Floyd’s murder. Twenty-five companies responded and 5/25 Move to Action was born.   Firms such as Bank of America and others have taken meaningful action to change business practices in a way that will create a more equitable region. Chicago has a history of civic leadership and engagement that is the envy of most other cities. Working individually and together, Chicago’s businesses have the potential to create a more dynamic, prosperous region, where the economy is growing, opportunity is increasing and equitably shared, and personal and public safety are the norm.   While this represents an inspiring start, we need to think bigger about the role of the business community in creating the region to which we all aspire. One year after George Floyd’s murder, The Chicago Community Trust and Corporate Coalition of Chicago asked Chicago business leaders to make public commitments to advancing racial equity by rethinking business policies and practices. Twenty-five companies responded with commitments, and 5/25 Move to Action was born. Since then, these firms and others have taken action to change businesses practices in a way that will create a more equitable region. To grow our economy, fuel inclusive opportunity, and tackle root causes of violence, employment initiatives need to scale to tens of thousands of employees, capital investment to hundreds of million dollars, and procurement opportunities to billions. Making change at this scale requires that companies start with their business strategies and consider how to advance both business strategies and goals for the region, together. And it requires more than the twenty-five companies that participated in 5/25 Move to Action. Chicago’s business community has a history of civic leadership and engagement that is the envy of most other cities. Dr. Perry made an insightful, provocative and inspiring presentation documenting, with fact-based research, the root causes that sustain structural inequality in housing and business for Black residents in Pittsburgh. Especially insightful were his comparisons of Pittsburgh to other cities. I look forward to reading his book: "Know Your Price: Valuing Black Lives and Property in America's Black Cities"

Listened to the great Matthew McConaughey give a speech this morning (I was lucky enough to meet him on set this summer)… he said a lot of things that stuck with me. One in particular stood out… “Don’t leave crumbs.. and the beauty of delayed gratification.” What are “crumbs”? They are the choices we make that make us have to look over our shoulder in the future. It’s those choices we make, where at some point down the road, that decision could negatively impact our life when it comes back around. If you leave crumbs today, they will cause you more stress tomorrow. Instead of creating outcomes that take from us, let’s make decisions that will pay us back in the future! That’s the joy of delayed gratification. As industry professionals, make those decisions today that will pay dividends in the future. Make decisions that bring ROI, don’t leave crumbs.
