I’m awful at self-promotion but I must admit, I’m pretty sure no other Holocaust museum IN THE WORLD is doing residencies for artists, writers and translators on a year round, multi-year basis. Correct me if I’m wrong.
I first thought about this programme in July 2021 and began fundraising for it in August 2021. We appointed a wonderful curator for the project in May 2022 and the first three artists in November 2022. At that time, the programme answered many organisational questions. However, at the end of six months of conversations, archive research and making, the programme has proved that it can a platform to debate many key questions in our field:
• How do we foster a responsible culture of care when engaging with stories of persecution, migration and loss?
• How do we understand what has been lost, stolen, destroyed — the things that don’t take archivable form?
• How do we ensure that the atrocities of the Nazi genocide are remembered by future generations without recourse to living eyewitnesses?
I’m beyond proud.
Join us next week on Thursday May 18th from 5.30-8.30pm, at Dai 大 hall, for the opening of our temporary exhibition Memorial Gestures I. Jordan Baseman, April Lin 林森 and Laura Fisher will be presenting work made during their 6-month residencies at Holocaust Centre North. We are so excited to share it with you.
