One week in ! I am happy to share that I have recently joined the Ignition Group as Junior Legal Counsel in the Contracts and Disputes Team. Thank you to Craig G Lawrence, Warren Joshua Ramiah and Kreshalen Virasamy for believing in me and trusting me this wonderful opportunity. A bigger thank you to Arthie Kanhaye, Thando Dlamini and Robyn Talbot for all their help and hard work in ensuring that my onboarding has been seamless. I am eager for the growth and learning opportunities which await me.

What a fantastic way to close off my week! Proud to announce that I have been selected as a member of the Young Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (Young AFSA). Having followed the organisation for some time, I am excited to get involved with the collaborative and interactive training, mentoring and learning initiatives. It is no secret that Arbitration is fast becoming the go-to method for Dispute Resolution, and I am honoured to be given an opportunity to learn from colleagues who are part of Young AFSA.

My sister and learnered colleague has again been called to present at this years South African Society for Labour Law (SASLAW) conference taking place in Cape Town from the 13th to 14th of September 2023. Unathi Dlamini, I’m incredibly proud of you, the hard work you’ve put into your presentation is admirable, you will do an amazing job next week ; Good luck.

At the beginning of this year I made the decision to upskill myself and register for the Advanced Short Course in Business Rescue Practice through the LEAD - Legal Education and Development and University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika Over the course of four months, I balanced work and studying, with the ultimate goal of being accredited as a Business Rescue Practitioner, in addition to my admission as an Attorney. The Laws and Regulations surrounding the rescuing of an entity, be it by way of restructuring the affairs of an entity to get it back to solvency, alternatively, by winding up an entity in order to get a better return for the business’ creditors, has always been an area of interest which I want to elevate to an area of specialisation. Fast forward to the 5 July 2023, I received the highly anticipated email from University of South Africa/Universiteit van Suid-Afrika confirming that I have passed the course in Business Rescue Practice (with Distinction), and I am now one major step closer to being accredited as a Business Rescue Practitioner. This is an incredibly exciting achievement for me and an affirmation that hard work and commitment to one’s goals, truly do pay off.

Yesterday I was fortunate to be able to attend the BRICS legal forum info Webinar hosted by the Law Society of South Africa. The conversation was centred around the refinement of the BRICS legal forum and the need for inclusivity in respect to the legal mechanisms which are to be relied on by the member states in Dispute Resolution. The Guest speakers, Advocate Ghandi Badela, Mr. Jackwell Feris and Mr Kumar touched on the importance of ensuring that legal practitioners of the respective member states acquaint themselves with the already existing mechanism of dispute resolution and give thought to the enhancement of such mechanisms to be best suited for the BRICS+ community. What I found interesting with the BRICS+ legal forum , is mainly the opportunity of being involved in the development of refined Rule of Law which moves away from the laws of the west as we may know it , and further the establishment of legal frameworks that are aimed at the development of the various member states within BRICS plus Lastly , as young legal practitioners we’ve been encouraged to familiarise ourselves with multi jurisdictional laws, so when opportunities of involvement presents themselves, we are able to effectively participate and contribute.
