This is to inform you about the significant changes made in the recently released Short Summary of ICMR RDA & EAR 2023, in comparison to the previous version, ICMR RDA 2020. These changes aim to provide more comprehensive and accurate guidance on nutrient intake for various age groups. Below are the key modifications:
• Inclusion of Summary Table for Food-Based Approaches (Table A7): ICMR RDA & EAR 2023 now incorporates a summary table (Table A7) that outlines food-based approaches to meet the daily nutrient requirements for all age groups. This table will serve as a valuable reference for individuals and healthcare professionals alike, offering practical dietary suggestions for maintaining adequate nutrient levels.
• Separate Summary Tables for RDA & EAR for Each Nutrient: To enhance clarity and ease of reference, ICMR RDA & EAR 2023 introduces separate summary tables for Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) and Estimated Average Requirements (EAR) for each essential nutrient. This organization will facilitate a better understanding of nutrient intake requirements and aid in designing balanced dietary plans.
• Revisited Recommendations on Phosphorus: In the light of new scientific evidence and emerging research, the recommendations on phosphorus intake have been revisited in ICMR RDA & EAR 2023 (i.e 600mg). The revision considers the required molar ratio of calcium and phosphorus intake in humans, ensuring that the guidelines reflect the latest knowledge on nutrient interactions and their impact on overall health.
• Introduction of Weight-Based Energy Requirement and Calculation Method: Recognizing the importance of considering individual body weight when estimating energy needs, ICMR RDA & EAR 2023 also introduces a weight-based energy requirement and a new method of calculation. This personalized approach will contribute to more accurate energy intake recommendations, supporting better nutritional outcomes for diverse population groups.
These changes in the ICMR RDA & EAR 2023 represent a significant step forward in providing up-to-date and evidence-based dietary guidance to promote optimal health and well-being.
However, as a part of industry standards and practice we shall only start following the above changes after confirmation and advisory orders from FSSAI.
