Moreover, the absence of pollution control measures, traffic management plans, and initiatives for Yamuna and heritage preservation highlight the dire need for comprehensive development strategies. Mathura grapples with challenges stemming from improper urbanization, electrification, and connectivity, exacerbating the struggle for efficient public transport. On a serene winter morning in Kolkata, I experienced a moment of tranquility strolling along the Ganga's banks at Princep Ghat. As December's chill gently set in, the city's relaxed pace was a refreshing contrast to the hurried life in metro cities like Mumbai. Taking a small boat across the river offered a unique perspective of Kolkata’s vibrant life on one side and picturesque Howrah on the other. This cultural heritage, with its colorful boats and lively atmosphere, is a true testament to Kolkata's enduring charm. What struck me most, however, was the seamless integration of technology in preserving this heritage. The once powerful boatmen, or 'majhis', now find their strength waning against the demanding currents of the Ganga. The solution? A blend of tradition and innovation. The boats, still adorned with their oars, are now equipped with modest motors. These motors don’t overpower the boat's movement but rather complement the majhis' efforts. The most noteworthy aspect is the commitment to sustainability. In a city as beautiful as Kolkata, it’s crucial that such traditions don’t contribute to environmental degradation. Hence, these boats are fitted with solar panels – a detail you can notice upon closer inspection. This use of renewable energy ensures that the boats can navigate the Ganga without relying on fossil fuels. This harmonious marriage of culture, technology, and sustainability during a tranquil boat ride on the Ganga made me realize how a city can maintain its soul.
