Tensions in the Red Sea spill over into conflict, the US and the UK with support from other countries carried out airstrikes on Houthi facilities across Yemen on Thursday after repeated attacks by Houthi fighters on commercial vessels crossing the Red Sea in recent weeks. The Houthis have vowed retaliation, and Egypt warns of regional escalation. Suez Canal revenues since the beginning of 2024 have been plummeting by 40% y-o-y, according to the Suez Canal Authority head. It looks like things are going to get worse before they get better. Shipping rates have doubled and tensions in the Red Sea rise following the Houthis ‘mistakenly’ targeting an oil tanker. Enterprise AM goes in detail about the possible outcomes. International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva thinks Egypt and the region will suffer an economic hit if there is a prolonged conflict in Gaza. This comes at a time when growth is slow, interest rates are high, and the cost of servicing debt has increased.
