📣 Yesterday, Drs. Purcell and Robinson presented the Blum Center's latest research on the American public's perceptions of #HumanTrafficking in the United States at the International Studies Association's 2024 annual conference. Together with survivor-centered data from the #FreedomLifeMap, a new tool developed with our partner EverFree, data on perceptions will help policymakers, service providers, and funders know where the gaps between the realities of human trafficking and perceptions are and identify the entry points for filling those gaps for more effective anti-trafficking programs and policy. . . . . #ISA2024 #UCIBlumCenter #UCI #endhumantrafficking #ScienceDrivingSolutions #perceptions #policymaking #DataBasedSolutions

Identifying actual solutions based on objective facts is how we can make a positive impact. As a field we must rid ourselves of all bias. For example, the phrase "we don't have data to support this, but we believe that ..." or "we know that ..." (with no support) must be ignored. Our field is driven by this type of "research" and it actually ends up harming survivors and wastes resources. I join Bill in the call to unify around a strategic approach to solutions.
🌟 Have you read the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office on Trafficking in Persons' latest National Human Trafficking Prevention Framework? This report underscores the necessity of a collective impact approach in eradicating human trafficking—a cause deeply close to my heart. 💡 The Framework outlines a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary strategy to combat human trafficking, emphasizing the critical role of collaboration across sectors. From public health to law enforcement and beyond, it calls for unity in our efforts to protect the most vulnerable among us. 🤝 I am particularly struck by the report's alignment with the principles Brittany Dunn, MBA and I discuss in our book 📚. (https://a.co/d/dI8vpYF) It reaffirms my belief that collective impact is not just beneficial but essential in our fight against human trafficking. This report serves as a potent reminder of the power of collaboration, echoing the message that we are stronger together. 💪 My commitment to fostering collective impact as the path forward in eradicating human trafficking has never been stronger. Let's draw inspiration from this Framework and work together towards a world free of trafficking. 🌍 For those interested in delving deeper, I highly recommend reading the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/euuHFPRr Let's engage in this critical conversation and turn our collective commitment into action. 🚀 #HumanTraffickingPrevention #CollectiveImpact #SocialChange

#PolicyandAdvocacy: Remarkable legislative initiatives are paving the way for #HVIP funding. Notably, the 2023-2024 Break the Cycle of Violence Act (H.R. 5003), proposed by Representative Steven Horsford (D-NV-4) and co-led by Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), seeks to allocate $5 billion to advance CVI strategies through innovative grant programs supporting violence intervention efforts. Policymakers possess a diverse toolkit to champion policy changes that have the potential to significantly enhance #PublicHealth outcomes in the realm of violence. 📢 Advancing Kenya's Justice System for Adult and Child Sexual and Domestic Violence Survivors We are proud to share the results of our comprehensive statistical analysis of adult and children's sexual and domestic violence cases as they flowed through Kenya's justice system, starting from the medical stage to the prosecution stage. Our research highlights essential predictive factors at each stage of the judicial process, with found that the initial investigation stage carries the most weight in determining case outcomes. This pivotal finding emphasizes the pressing need for strategies that ensure the preservation of crucial forensic evidence, thereby fostering justice for survivors spanning all age demographics. ⚖️ Forging Pathways to Justice: Empowering Survivors and Building a Safer Future To accelerate the journey towards justice for survivors, young and old, we must reinforce systems that help them to report their experiences promptly. This includes ensuring clinics are easily accessible, simplifying administrative processes, and enhancing forensic understanding and training among criminal justice professionals, and utilising survivor testimonies to connect crimes, uncover serial offenders, and identify crime hotspots for a safer environment for all. Contact me to learn more. Thank you to the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for sponsoring this important project, which forms part of Sarah Rockowitz' PhD thesis, and grateful to @P4HR and the @WanguKanjaF, our Kenyan partners who led the project. #PioneeringJustice #StandWithSurvivors #ForensicAdvancements #EmpowerSurvivors #DataLedJustice #CrimeInsights #InnovatingJustice #Kenya #FCDO #gbv #SGBV #GCRF
NEW PAPER ALERT! Sarah Rockowitz, Heather Flowe, PhD, Laura Stevens, Melissa Colloff, Lady, Wangu Kanja, and James Rockey have conducted a secondary data analysis to see case attrition over a 4 year period based on crime type, either domestic or sexual violence. They looked at the proportion of survivors by crime type who accessed medico legal services as measured by key case characteristics such as type of offence & age of victim, with the outcome variable being whether the case proceeded through the case referral pathway to court. The findings show that children are more likely to make it to every step of the pathway than adults, & that for both adults and children, certain factors, such as SV vs DV and the presence of forensic evidence, increase one’s odds of moving through the case referral pathway. Survivors of SV/DV should have equal access to medicolegal services regardless of their age, the presence of forensic evidence, or the location of the attack. Work must be done to improve the case referral pathway so that survivors are awarded equal access to services. Read the paper here - https://lnkd.in/efyznEep #phd #dataanalysis #researchmatters
