Above is snap shot of the formal gold mining industry in 2021, with aggregated data from over 450 operating mines that produced 63 Moz during the year. We at Skarn have just released an update of our Gold Greenhouse Gas intensity curve. The data can be viewed on a country basis (as above), on a mine-by-mine or company basis.

Total emissions from the formal gold mining sector during 2021, were a little over 100Mt CO2e (Scope 1 accounts for 54% and Scope 2, 46%). On the far right is South Africa, where the fossil heavy grid emits over a tonne of CO2 per MWh of electricity produced.

We have historical data to 2018 and forward-looking analysis to 2025, which takes into account mining companies plans to implement decarbonisation strategies.
