The Bottomless Pit of Purpose

I was reading Forbes magazine earlier, and I found an article about some workplace statistics that BLEW MY MIND. Let me share them with you real quick and see if you have the same response.

  1. 58% of managers are promoted without training and only because they themselves were good at a certain job and not because of their ability to manage people.
  2. 89% of bosses believe that employees quit their job because they are not getting paid enough when in reality only 12% of employees said that they were leaving the work place for that reason.
  3. 58% of people said that they would trust a stranger over their own boss.
  4. 79% of people who quit their jobs report that they left because of lack of appreciation.
  5. 53% of Americans report being unhappy with their work. (OVER HALF OF THE POPULATION)
  6. Recognition is the number one thing that people said would inspire them to produce great work.

These were only some of the statistics that they cited, and as you can see things are not looking too great for the average worker, or boss for that matter.

Take a moment and think about where you are at? Are you under someone at work or are you over others? Maybe both? Either way you may relate to these statistics right about now.

Why are so many people stuck? Why is recognition and appreciation so high on people's priority list? Well...I think it’s quite simple really. According to Simon Sinek- one of the biggest things the newer generations (millennials mainly) are wanting in life is to make an impact.

So, if we want to make an impact, then how do we do that? Well, we go work for someone that we think is creating the kind of impact that we want to help make. Now, imagine helping your boss make that impact and then not getting credit for that?

What if you were a football player and your team won the super bowl... and then you were excluded from all the celebrations, all the pictures, all news stories and all the fame. What if they just gave you a big paycheck and that was it. No one would ever remember or even know your name. You would feel pretty crummy right?

That is what's happening in today's workplaces. Most of us are helping someone's team achieve their purpose; meanwhile, we feel like we lack purpose.

What's the fix for this? What do you think?

I think I know what it is, and it all comes down to knowing YOUR purpose and your WHY. Once you know those things, you now can either strike out on your own with absolute certainty or be happily employed by someone else knowing that the cause you’re serving is not only your bosses but also your own!

What do you think? Do you know your real drive? Or are you chasing dreams and desires that are not your own? Are you chasing the vision of your parents? Your friends? Or maybe even the unspoken expectations that you feel society is putting on you?

Either way, knowing your true purpose and drive is a MUST. NON NEGOTIABLE. You will not be content or happy in life until you start living the life you were made to live.

This is pretty much the solver of most workplace issues. I remember when I ran an department and people would jump ship all the time. Of course they would tell me they don't pay enough but when I look back I kind of understood why they left. The sad part is you can't please everybody and as a manager you're really there to get the job done. Not any means necessary but you have to do what's in the best interest of your people in order to get what you need to get out of them for the corporation. But if you feel like that's not important then you continue to lose people after people and still you start to learn how to put your people first and still get the results for the corporation or business.
