Shalom Aleichem, my beloved readers. May God bless you with all the best. My past articles are published on my LinkedIn, you can also check my profile there.

How many of you still think practice makes perfect? For the longest time, I kept it as my mantra. Japanese people have a culture of hard work. Through hard work, you can achieve anything. No, you can not.

It is false to believe that we only need to invest hard work and lots of time to be good in something.

When I was in grade school, the teachers often punished me for my bad handwriting. I was convinced that it was beyond me to have beautiful handwriting because over the years no matter what I did, no matter how many hours I spent fixing my handwriting, it was never satisfactory.

Until I was 40 and started to dive back into fountain pens. I first learned to write using one at six years old. I am very familiar with the finicky nature of fountain pens and as a child, I hated it. Ballpoints were the superior writing instrument to the young me, or are they? It turns out that a well-made and well-maintained fountain pen partnered with the right paper and ink delivers exceptional results and unparalleled writing pleasure.

No wonder as a child I hated it. It was a bad, low-quality pen (old-time Hero brand, cheapest made-in-China pen), unmaintained, paired with bad paper (cheapest notebook), only the ink (Parker Quink) was ok.

It was tough to unlearn decades of wrong writing techniques and bad habits and start again from scratch.

Thanks to the local fountain pen community, I was able to fix and improve my handwriting to a level that I never even dreamt of.

My teachers would demand great results but never once taught me the proper posture and the proper way to hold a pen. It turns out, they are all related to producing beautiful calligraphy-grade handwriting. One must hold a correct posture and place the paper in the proper position, to properly hold the pen. Only then can we start training in proper handwriting. My teachers only demanded without ever teaching me proper writing techniques. Now I have beautiful handwriting and I love seeing how much I improve over time.

I repeated my experience with my daughter and she too now has beautiful handwriting. Previously due to the lack of education in school, she had terrible handwriting.

Every good sensei will train you with proper stance first before teaching you the proper punch. My teachers never taught me the proper stance or technique, yet demanded excellent results.

All the negative attitude and comments convinced me that I had no talent for writing. As it turns out, it was my teachers' fault, not mine I did not deliver. When one constantly demands you to deliver but you never live up to their expectation, get an expert opinion if possible, or at least other people who are in the know. The Internet seriously helps in this case. I can now type how to write calligraphy and there will be tons of tutorials showing how to from stance to technique. With the help of another person to correct my position or just a mirror to correct myself, I can start training properly. Only perfect practice makes perfect results.

If you continuously practice along the mindset of practice makes perfect and you do not even know the proper technique, you will become an expert in the wrong technique. The intended results will never be achieved.

Practice alone is never enough. Get a proper coach, at least scour the net to get the proper information from credible sources. I sourced my information on writing from IAMPETH, arguably the highest-skilled people in handwriting and calligraphy. With humbleness and gratitude, God would guide you to the right place, info, or both in the skill that you are pursuing.

We can only grow in a conducive environment. When one is in a negative/toxic environment, they will never grow. A negative/toxic environment stunts growth.

If you strive to be great, be humble, always seek to improve yourself, and always seek the best information. With God's blessings, one should obtain the necessary means and information. Then it is the hard work of doing your best in every training, and every repetition. Take a good rest, breaks are necessary for improvement. One cannot improve with non-stop work, you will only get bored and burn out. I now have better control over the shape of my letters after a long hiatus. What a pleasant surprise, but the consistency went down. Time to get back to training.

The principle of perfect training makes perfect, delivers in every field and discipline. Keep your chin up, pray, and stay humble, in time God will show you the right way that fits you. Where you can grow and flourish. To be the best version of you that God intended.

If you have something that you want to improve or even master in life but seemingly never improve in, maybe you need to dig deeper for better information and proper training. Keep this up and you will be surprised at how many things in life you can master.

Have a blessed week and please do share this article if you find it interesting. You never know who will be blessed, God bless.
