Whisperer V

cur. Chiara Nuzzi

ICA, Milano

05 April 2023 — 09 June 2023

In the context of the exhibition Lito Kattou. Whisperers curated by Chiara Nuzzi, on view from April 5 to June 9, 2023 at Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, Fondazione ICA Milano is pleased to welcome from April 6 the work Whisperer V, an element of connection and synergy between the two foundations in Milan.

Aimed at delving into the work of Cypriot artist Lito Kattou (1990), the exhibition presents the sculptures series Whisperers (2022), specially conceived for the occasion, and focuses on the idea of community in a timeless setting capable of implementing new strategies of coexistence. Her works - hybrid and abstract bodies, anthropomorphic or animal creatures within which the artist integrates natural and cosmic elements - analyse the process of changing matter over time, the theme of otherness and unknown space-time scenarios.

Installed on the facade of Fondazione ICA Milano, Whisperer V is part of the group of sculptures exhibited in the spaces of Fondazione Pomodoro. The imposing silhouette encompasses some thistle flowers and encapsulates the ideas and research at the core of the artist's production, coherently connecting to the works in the spaces of Fondazione Pomodoro. In this work, Kattou synthesises the idea of coexisting with the surrounding environment also thanks to the location dedicated to the work itself; in fact, the sculpture is located outside and dialogues, inevitably, with its context and the natural phenomena connected to it. The dimension disclosed by Kattou, of which the Whisperers community is a spokesperson, departs entirely from an anthropocentric vision in favour of a dimension that foregrounds collectivity, collaboration and sustainability.

Kattou invites us into a world with no defined space-time coordinates, whose inhabitants live in a condition of democratic coexistence with the surrounding environment and nature.
