Ficus religiosa - Sacred Fig / Bo Tree - 150 Seeds

Ficus religiosa is known by a wide variety of names - Bodhi Tree, Bo Tree, Peepal, Beepul Tree, Pipal, Pipalla, Sacred Tree, Ashwattha, Ashvattha, Sacred Fig or the Buddha Tree. 
 
Native to India, Ceylon, southern China and South East Asia, it is a species of fig with an ancient recorded history, appearing in literature long before Gautama Buddha sat under its branches meditating and achieved enlightenment.  It is a sacred tree to both Hindus and Buddhists and is the oldest depicted tree in Indian art and literature and it can be said that this is the mythical 'World Tree' or the 'Tree Of Life' of the Indian subcontinent.
 
In the wild it is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 30m tall and with a mid-grey trunk up to 3m in diameter. Although closely related to the Banyan, it does not develop the large air roots a feature of the Banyan.  Leaves are light green, with red to purple tones in  new foliage, from 10cm to 17.5cm in lengthy and quite distinctive - it is the only fig where the leaves develop a long "mouses tail".  Fruit is small - 1 to 1.5cm, initially green ripening to a deep purple and fruit of this species are edible.
 
Ficus religiosa prefers partial shade to full sun and likes a humus rich soil and plenty of water.  This is a tropical species and is not frost tolerant.  It will suffer permanent damage at temperatures below -2°C, but as with figs generally it grows happily indoors.
 
This fig is a great houseplant or starter plant for Bonsai and as with most figs it is easy to grow, adapts easily to pot culture and indoor conditions and is a favourite plant for Bonsai as it is fast growing, adapts quickly to a container and the trunk forms robust, beautiful shapes.  As the plant develops and is pruned, the leaves will gradually reduce in size.  The small colourful fruit also make an interesting feature.
