The Tube carries more than a billion passengers each year - four million journeys each day and it's growing. It's more reliable than ever and we are committed to improve it to meet London's growing population.

Better trains and signalling

The first ever air-conditioned walk-through Tube trains are now in operation on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, with the District line scheduled for the upgrade next. And we’re renewing older parts of the network, resulting in more comfortable journeys and a faster, more reliable service.

We’re also planning new trains and signalling for the Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City lines. The Piccadilly line will lead the way, with work on signalling beginning in 2019 and the first new trains in service in 2022.

Station improvements

Major building projects are underway at Tottenham Court Road, Victoria, Bank and Bond Street stations to further increase capacity, accessibility and reduce journey times.

Bank and Monument

We’re building several new escalators and a new station entrance. There will also be more room for Northern line passengers at the interlinked stations by 2021

Bond Street

We're building a new Tube station entrance at Bond Street that will lead to a new ticket hall. We’re also fitting new escalators to serve the Jubilee line, and installing lifts to provide step-free access from street to platform.

The station will become an interchange for Crossrail services from 2018.

Victoria

We’re building a new ticket hall with street level entrance and a larger Victoria line ticket hall, with a new interchange tunnel to connect the two. We’re also providing nine new escalators and new lifts that will provide step-free access between street, ticket hall and Victoria line platform level by 2018.

Tottenham Court Road

We’re investing more than £1bn towards a new Crossrail station and a Tube station that was rebuilt in 2016. There is a public plaza outside Centre Point with wider pavements, better cycling facilities and improvements to bus services. New lifts have been fitted to provide step-free access from street to platform.

Driverless trains

The Mayor has committed to ensuring that no more Tube trains are ordered with an old-fashioned driver cab.

TfL plan to introduce a new generation of trains that will be capable of full automation. They will also be energy efficient, walk-through and air-cooled.

These trains will be able to run closer together, at higher overall speeds, increasing the capacity of the line. Fully automated trains will always have a member of staff on board, as is already the case on the Docklands Light Railway.

Night Tube

The Night Tube supports London's 24-hour lifestyle by offering a round-the-clock service on Fridays and Saturdays, on five lines: the Jubilee, Victoria, and most of the Central, Northern and Piccadilly lines.

Northern Line extension

The Northern Line is being extended to Nine Elms and Battersea. This forms a key element of the regeneration of the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea area.

This regeneration could create up to 25,000 jobs and 20,000 new homes. Journey times from Nine Elms or Battersea to the West End or the City will, in some cases, be less than 15 minutes.

Customer services

As part of the Tube’s modernisation programme, The Mayor and TfL are proposing to change the way that staff on the Underground interact with customers.

Currently station staff are remote, behind closed doors or ticket office windows. We are proposing that they will be based in ticket halls, at ticket machines, on gatelines and platforms. That way they'll be ready and available to give the best face-to-face service for customers.

There will also be more and better ticket machines, updated to make them easier and faster to use. The savings made as a result of these changes will be reinvested into the improvements we continue to make on the network, including:

  • More reliable and frequent services
  • Air-conditioned trains
  • WiFi
