(CS) Over 90 percent of Luxembourg households own at least one computer with 93 percent indicating they have internet access in a recent Statec study.

The study shows how quickly new technologies have spread in Luxembourg over the past 12 years. While only 25 percent of households had internet access in 2000 this number has more than tripled over the past decade.

Around one third of residents used the internet regularly in 2000, with nine out of ten residents aged 16 to 74 using the internet regularly in 2012. Almost 75 percent of users have a highspeed internet access with the number of Modem and ISDN users declining from 51 percent in 2005 to just 19 percent in 2012.

Mobile internet use has also increased steeply. While only 26 percent in 2006 used a mobile phone to access the internet, in 2010 already this number had climbed to 44 percent. In 2012, some 20 percent accessed the internet on the go via a touchscreen tablet device.

Emails and online shopping among main uses

The majority of internet users meanwhile use the technology for private purposes and only 47 percent accessed the internet from work at the beginning of 2011.

Emails and online research were among the most frequently cited activities of users on the internet with nine out of ten regularly using these services. They were followed by reading newspapers and magazines online, with a steep increase from just 43 percent in 2005 to 75 percent in 2012, and other activities, such as logging on to social networks (55 percent in 2012), online shopping, holiday and event bookings and bank transactions.

Internet usage appears to be linked mainly to age, the study shows, and less to other factors such as education or infrastructure. Some 18 percent of those aged 55 to 74 in 2012 indicated not to use the internet.

Of everyone not using the internet, 25 percent said they don't have the skills to use it, while 53 percent don't think they need it. Some 13 percent meanwhile said they didn't use the internet for security concerns.

Only four years ago, this latter number was as low as 4 percent showing a rising concern.
