Characteristics:
Habit
An impressiv, splendid tree, 25-35 m tall, 12-20 m wide, broadly ovoid or domed to extended with round crown, straight when old with clear stem for about the first 10 m; main branches arching-upright, twigs hanging down to the ground in the lower crown region, initially fast-growing, 30-70 cm a year

Blossom
Flower bowls like tulips, green-yellow with orange spots inside, June; flowers only after 15 years
Leaves
Unmistakable leaf shape; three-lobed, 15 cm long, middle lobe appears to have been cut out; fresh green, bluish green underneath; autumn colours at end of September, flaming golden yellow to yellow brown

Inconspicuous, cone-shaped
Roots
Shallow, far-reaching, fleshy and breaking easily, not tolerant of soil compaction, and pavement close to roots
Demands
Sun; needs warmth, frost hardy but sensitive to late frost, broken by wind; somewhat tolerant of urban pollution
Soil
Fresh to moist; for nutritious, sandy-loamy, always well drained mineral substrates; prefers slightly acidic or neutral pH, chalk tolerated, chlorotic with too much chalk; sensitive to salt
Tips
Spring planting recommended, roots must not be allowed to dry out; cut only in autumn or early winter
