Malta’s coastline can suit any mood. You’ll find undulating cliffs and quiet coves all around the undeveloped south and east of the island, perfect for an adventure and a chance to find your own private beach – look out for the turquoise waters of St. Peter’s Pool in Marsaxlokk. While there are no sandy beaches around Sliema and St. Julian’s, there are several man-made lidos and pebbled beaches for a lazy day beneath the sun. The most beautiful sandy beaches are found in the north, at Mellieha Bay, Golden Bay and Tuffieha Bay.
Gozo is fringed by spectacular cliffs and some of the beaches don’t have footprints. Ramla Bay is the prettiest and most popular but you can also find several smaller beaches away from the crowds. A stay in Marsalforn or Xlendi allows you to be very close to the sea. Comino’s Blue Lagoon is now world famous and it’s hard to find a more beautiful spot to sunbathe in the entire Mediterranean. But don’t miss Santa Marija Bay, which is an excellent sandy beach nearby.

While the beaches are different across the islands, they are all dominated by blissful Mediterranean waters. Warm and shallow, almost all the beaches have water that is ideal for less-confident swimmers. The currents are near non-existent and you can sometimes walk out for a quarter of a mile at low tide. A soft salty breeze drifts off the water and the colours look just like the postcards. So whether you’re sunbathing on a rocky lido or a golden sandy beach, the beauty of the Mediterranean is all around.
