The images went around the world and the controversy focused on the Tibetan religious leader, the Dalai Lama, for his actions with a child at a public event.

The 87-year-old leader had a child on his lap during a conference he was giving and kissed him on the lips.

Afterwards, he said "suck my tongue", a suggestion the boy did not comply with despite the Dalai Lama showing him his tongue for a few seconds.

Criticism rained down on the leader of Tibetan Buddhism and, a few days later, an official statement was issued from Tibet, apologising for the images that went viral.

The Dalai Lama's apology to the child

"A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug," the statement read.

"His Holiness wishes to apologise to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused

"His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident."

However, on Monday, the boy broke his silence and spoke out for the first time in the aftermath.

A Tibetan radio station, Voice of Tibet, interviewed the boy and his mother. The radio station broadcasts programmes in Tibetan and Mandarin.

The child: It's a great experience

It was amazing to meet His Holiness and I think it's a great experience to meet someone with so much positive energy," said the boy, who had a few minutes meeting with the Tibetan leader.

"It's a really nice feeling to meet him and you get a lot of that positive energy.

"Not just like that, but once you get the positive energy I think you're happier and it's a better thing, you smile a lot more."
