Carnmenellis cairn
Carnmenellis cairn submitted by Bladup : Carnmenellis Cairn (Vote or comment on this photo)
A cairn on the summit of Carnmenellis. Despite being much robbed out and surrounded by modern intrusions, this bronze age cairn is still a prominent landscape feature. The hill on which it is situated lends its name to the upland granite district of Carnmenellis and is the highest point for miles around offering superb views. There is a good alignnment between the cairn, Nine Maidens Wendron and on to Hangman's barrow on the near skyline.

The cairn itself is built around a tor outcrop of which there are several on this hill in varying states of mutilation due to the activities of stone splitters. Borlase described a now vanished circle around an outcrop and it seems likely that there were more stones on the hill before the quarrymen arrived.
Most of (but not all of) the summit is access land however getting up is tricky and involves crossing wire fences and wading through gorse and scrub unless you want to trespass. There is no right of way to the top.
Best approached from Menherion farm to the north.
