High Moor Cairns
High Moor Cairns submitted by LordMureth : Looking at the third cairn from the opposite angle. That granite cube looks really out of place.... was it part of the original structure and has just been worked so much it's now recognisable? (Vote or comment on this photo)
Two, possibly three cairns on High Moor between Maiden Tor and Buttern Hill, marked clearly on OS map. One is small, and easily recognisable as a cairn - it can be seen from a LONG way away, if you're walking from Davidstow to Brown Willy or from the Fernacre side as we did this time, once you round the lower slopes of Roughtor.

To the east of the most distinct cairn is a much wider embankment, obviously a cairn but more dilapidated; at least twice the diameter of the first - with a large pond now in the middle.

To the west of the first cairn is a strange jumble of rocks; a pile of massive granite slabs mixed with what looked like earthfast moorstones - with one smaller stone looking more recently worked. The larger stones were big enough to have formed what *could* have been a very impressive structure... but the presence of what looks like a more modern "cube" amongst them, underneath what looks to be a much older "capstone", makes me think this perhaps *was* once some kind of burial chamber, that's been destroyed and mixed with stones from the mine working to the north?

High Moor Cairns submitted by LordMureth : The third "cairn". Or burial chamber. Or pile of stones. Very hard to tell! It looks like one from this angle. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

High Moor Cairns submitted by LordMureth : The large cairn. Getting a decent photo was hard; but it's obvious when you're there! (Vote or comment on this photo)
