Access! It's an impressive site!! Huge!!!!

TheCaptain visited on 19th Sep 2005 - their rating: Cond: 5 Amb: 5 Access: 4 Take the road towards Blandas from Montdardier, and after a few kilometres there is a big junction of ways. About 600 metres down the road towards Blandas from the junction, and in the field to the right can be seen this tremendous cromlech. This is a proper circle of stones, with 52 standing stones up to about 1.8 metres high making a circle of about 120 metres diameter. At the centre is a large menhir, well over two metres high. There are gaps in the circle, and several more stones which were possibly part of the circle are laying down. The stones which make up the circle are all different shapes and sizes, of this fragile and pockmarked limestone. There are tall thin ones, big rectangular stumps, short squat blocks, diamonds, triangles, slanted top stones and a few almonds. Just sat at the centre of this circle looking at all the stones around me it feels wonderful. One of the stones has like a giant finger pointing upwards. One of them is full of holes (number 35 in my counting !). Most of them are very evenly spaced, but it is not all that way. This really is a special place. Most of the stones are of the local crumbly flaky pale limestone, but not all, as a few of the large stones are a dark brown gritty sort of rock.

It seems to be a generally held opinion that there are no "real, proper" stone circles outside the British Isles. Yet on the Causse de Blandas, in southern France, there are several, some of which are superb. This is probably the best of them all.

The circle is about 120 metres in diameter, with still about 50 stones up to 1.8 metres tall standing in position, and has a large central menhir, standing well over 2 metres high. The stones that remain are regularly spaced, at about 6 metres apart.

The stones which make up the circle are all different shapes and sizes. There are tall thin ones, big rectangular slabs and short squat blocks. There are diamonds, triangles. almonds and slanted top stones. One is like a giant finger pointing skywards, and another is full of holes. Most of the stones are of the local flaky limestone, but not all, as some of the larger stones are of a brown gritty sort of rock.

It is a truly wonderful place, and hardly known by anyone. I can only recommend anyone with an interest in stone circles visits. It deserves to be known throughout the world.

I am glad someone is now taking notice of the stone shapes. I suspect they mean the same in France as here, but no proof yet. Keep on noticing the shapes and where abouts they are in the circle. Jack.

I don't know how that myth got started. There are stone circles outside the British Isles and the Megalithic Map is beginning to show just where they are.

but most of the other known circles or cromlechs seem to be either cairn circles or not circles at all. Perhaps this myth is partly due to Burls stone circles books which mention only a few places in Brittany as the only places outside the British Isles, but they arent "proper" circles.

Despite it not being the best of weather while I was here, and a bit cold and windy, I just sat in the centre and looked at the world around me. It was easy to see all the differently shaped stones dancing around me. I wouldnt be surprised if several of the stones have certain distinct purposes. I could see Bodmin Moor triangles pointing skywards. There were Brodgar slant tops. Made me think of Jack's recent articles.

It is a truly magical place. I was nearing the end of my 6 month break from work, and up until this moment I was not looking forwards to finishing and getting back to "normality" and working life again at all.

But being here a sort of calm came over me, and I started to think that my 5 months of searching out ancient sites through France was coming to a natural end. I didnt need to spend all my time searching out these places just to get the numbers up, I had now seen enough, and this was the sort of Holy Grail, a real, proper French stone circle. Not some wierd shape of small stones. Not a ring from around the edge of a burial mound. But a proper large open circle, and it even has a great big menhir in the middle. Bang in the middle. Nobody knows its purpose, but it can only have been here as some sort of ceremonial place, it could have no other purpose.

There are the remains of a few others in the vicinity too, but unfortunately most are pretty much destroyed. But it makes you think. Was it just up on this bit of plateau they had these circles ? If so why? If not, what has happened to all the others ?

I just loved it.
