Devil's Stone (Perth & Kinross)
Devil's Stone (Perth & Kinross) submitted by Nick : This large stone stands within the grounds of the Swallow Hotel (formerly the Graystane Hotel) just off the main Dundee-Perth dual carriageway, the A85. A small road to Denhead of Gray leads off the roundabout, and there is ample car parking at the hotel. Ask for permission to view the stone, which is readily granted. It lies behind the Conference Centre to the right of the main hotel. Adjacen... (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone on outskirts of Dundee in Perthshire

Additional information supplied by Drew Parsons in September 2012: This standing stone is located behind some railings in a stone wall. You can pull off the road onto a grass verge on the corner of the lane leading off the junction of the A90 and A85 on the western side of Dundee. There are other stones on the east side of this lane although they are in a jumble and may not be of archaeological importance. The Devil's Stone has a number of what are probably faults or crack lines in it.

The stone in the grounds of Greystane House is in Angus, not Perthshire, as the nearby burn formed the boundry between the Counties.

Thanks Andy...have done so(hopefully I've resized them properly too),I'd appreciate if you could just delete my attempt...cheers

The legend of how this stone came to be where it is goes like this...
St.Boniface,a follower of St. Columbo was building a chapel in honour of St.Ninian by a sacred well(the area Ninewells...where Dark Stane Roundie is...is a corruption of Ninian's Well) on the northern shore of the river Tay...The devil was strolling on the southern shores and the sight of the holy man's work enraged him so much he plucked a gigantic boulder from the earth with the intention of destroying the chapel.God intervened and caused the rock to fly too far and land in it's present site...this caused the Devil to become so angry he plucked an even larger rock, but he stepped into the waters of the Tay which burned at his legs so didn't throw hard enough, this rock landed in the Tay causing a splash which soaked the Devil causing him to flee in pain.
This 2nd rock is visible at low tide close to what was The Bay Of Gowrie and is known affectionately as "Whale Rock".
Greystanes Hotel is now known as The Swallow Hotel and the stone is no longer accessible from the main road.
I do have my own theory as to the positioning of The Devil's Stane..but I won't bore you with that....unless you really want.

Did this St. Columbo wear a grubby mac? Oh, and there's just one more thing, what is your theory? I reckon it was put there before the Christians were around. Situated in a very fertile plain with a source of fresh water nearby, it may have been the focal point of a community and served as a permanent marker of theirs and their forebears existence. Or it possibly is just an erratic, dumped by the ice, which developed a mythology down the line by people seeking to fulfill their own agendas.

I visited this very site on the 16th of March this year(2008)..and have taken some pics...I remember this stone very well from my youth and though it seems much smaller than I recall, there was said to be a curse on the stone, probably spread by the site owners to stop us youngsters from climbing on it...this was highly effective with me I can assure you!!
I'm quite new on the site and haven't explored fully yet...but I do know the(early christian)version of the stone's reason for being here...I'll print it if it hasn't already been mentioned
