Golenkinia radiata - Green Algae

#1 Post by ImperatorRex » Sun Jun 19, 2022 1:48 pm

Guess the photos below show the green alga "Golenkinia radiata".
The algae has a a gelatinous sheath around the cell body with many elongated spiny projections / "bristles", these do not thicken at the base, in contrast to "Acanthosphaera".
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acanthosp ... ermann.jpg)

The body hosts a single, cup-shaped chloroplast with a single pyrenoid.

Not too much photos out there with Golenkinia...would be great if you could share!
Maybe you have also photos from Acanthosphaera?

Hi Jochen,

Excellent photos of an interesting alga! Does this alga have a flagellum to get around or are the bristles for floating and that is the mode of movement?

Thank you Tim and Luis for the kind comments.

Tim, the bristles are just for floating, no flagellum and any active movement.
