Named in 1939 by Vasilii Ivanovich Gerasimovsky in honor of Valery Pavlovich Chkalov (Валерий Павлович Чкалов) (20 January (2 February) 1904, Vasiljevo, Balakhninsky district, Nizhny Novgorod province, Russian empire - 15 December 1938, Moscow, USSR), Russian aviator and test pilot. He was the first pilot to make a non-stop flight from Moscow to the USA via the North Pole.
