First Stamp of Independent Nauru

2020-01-31 Fri

The First Stamp of Independent Nauru was issued 8 months after the country gained independence from Australia.

The Republic of Nauru-formerly known as Pleasant Island is a small country on the equator. Nauru is the third-smallest country in the world behind the Vatican City, and Monaco, making it the smallest state in the South Pacific Ocean, the smallest state outside Europe, the smallest island state, and the smallest republic.

Micronesian and Polynesian peoples have lived on Nauru for thousands of years which fueled a 10 years-long civil war. In 1888, however, Germany took control of Nauru, and the civil war was put to an end. During World War I, in 1914, Australian forces seized Nauru from Germany. Finally, Nauru was granted self-rule in 1966 and full independence in 1968.

During few months after Independence, Nauru post used the previous stamps with an overprint. Finally, in the month of September two Postal stamps were issued on consecutive days. Hence, the first stamp was issued on 11th September.

The stamp depicts a young Nauru Woman looking at the Sun rising behind the mountain clad with the coconut tree. The stamp is a symbol of the Emergence of a new nation and the trees and the sea symbolizes the country.
