Cyrus Tang Hall of China at the Field Museum

The “Cyrus Tang Hall of China” exhibit at the Field Museum was a much-needed reinterpretation of the old China Halls, which had gradually fallen into disrepair. Morlight’s new lighting design coincided with the updated concept for the exhibit, lighting 9,000 square feet and 350 artifacts. Utilizing sensitive lighting for artifacts and a vast range of program lighting, the new design for the “Cyrus Tang Hall of China” improves the visitor experience and protects the integrity of the museum’s historic items.

Our approach to lighting the sensitive artifacts within the museum protected the objects from undue exposure without limiting guest interaction. Utilizing methods like lighting timers, we were able to serve visitors without compromising artifact safety. We also assisted the museum in elevating interactive and event spaces within the museum, including the shadow puppet theater and the Tea Gardens, and improved graphics and wayfinding throughout. This unified approach gave the contents of the “Cyrus Tang Hall of China” exhibit the setting it deserved, and was an appreciated renovation when the museum prepared to host the “Terra Cotta Warriors” in 2016.
