Rough-stalked Feather-moss - Brachythecium rutabulum

Description

A common but variable moss forming loose, medium-sized patches. Capsules are frequent, having a curved, egg-shaped form with a roughened seta (visible with a hand lens).

Identification difficulty
Habitat

Happy in a broad range of habitats. Shady or open places. On logs, stump, trunks and branches, as well as stones, rubble and rocks, walls and even soil, gravel or grassland. Only altitude or very high acidity seem to reduce its frequency.

UK Status

Very common and widespread in Britain.

VC55 Status

Very common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
