born in Pate-son on September 25, 1932 the son of Alfred H. Baumann and Katherine De Block Baumann. He moved to West Paterson in December 1932 and has remained there for all but one year. He attended the West Paterson Public Schools, Passaic Valley High School, received a BA from Montclair State Teachers College in June of 1954 and attained a Masters of Arts from Montclair State Teachers College in June of 1958. He was employed from 1953 to 1958 as a news reporter for the Paterson Morning Call.

From September 1954 through 1958 he was a teacher in West Paterson Public School 4 (now Beatrice Gilmore School) and in 1958 became Principal of West Paterson Memorial School until his retirement in 1995. Mr. Baumann served as Mayor of West Paterson from January 1, 1957 1960 (4 years) and again from January 1, 1963 through December 1987 serving a total of twenty-nine years. He also was a former President of NJ State League of Municipalities and a former Honorary Trustee of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center 1985-1990.

He served as a member of the West Paterson Fire Company 3 and is a member of the West Paterson Exempt Fireman's Association. He was currently the President of the West Paterson Historical Society and previously a member of the West Paterson Bicentennial Committee. In addition, Mr. Baumann served on the Board of Advisors for the Missionary Sisters Holy Family Residence. He was also a long time member of the West Paterson Regular Republican Club.

Mr. Baumann was a lifetime member for Westside United Methodist Church, Paterson, serving as a Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout Councilor and Elder of the Church. During Mr. Baumann's tenure as mayor he was instrumental in the major planning and development of West Paterson, which transformed the borough from a semi-rural town to a prominent and prosperous suburban community. Among his major achievements were the establishment of the West Paterson Free Public Library system and the later construction of the present modern library facility which was later dedicated in his honor and bears Mr.

Baumann's name. He brought the community into the Twentieth Century by the construction of one of the finest municipal complexes in the county which was dedicated in 1976. He had the foresight to upgrade and expand the entire municipal infrastructure including such projects as the greatly expanded park system, modern water system, and was prime mover of the West Paterson, Totowa, Little Falls regional sanitary sewer systems connection to the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission system. He also led the effort to construct the municipality's first Public Works facility. He was also an active member of the following civic organizations: West Paterson Civil Defense, Passaic Valley Kiwanis Club, Passaic Valley Elks, Honorary Member of St.

Andrews Club, Passaic County Republican Organization; West Paterson 50th Anniversary Committee, West Paterson 75th Anniversary Committee and Passaic County Historical Society. His cousins, Dorothy, James, Victoria, Robert and Tory De Block of West Paterson and cousins Dorothy and John De Block of Jefferson and other cousins survive him. of St. Catharine R.C. Church, Glen Rock, died June 10, 1999. Beloved son of the late John and Estelle (nee Men-zie). He was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his ordination on June 11.

Fr. Merity was chaplain at Mt. St. Andrews Villa, Paramus, for the past 10 years. His first assignment for 19 years was at St.

Cecelia in Kearny. He then served as chaplain to the Bergen County Institutions in Paramus, and later Archdiocesan Coordinator of Hospital Chaplains. He served as pastor of Ascension Church in New Mil-ford. He later served as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Visitation in Paramus, then at St. Catharine in Glen Rock, where he remained on in rssidence after his retirement.

He graduated from Seton Hall University (BA), and received a Masters Degree in Counseling from St.Johns University. He also earned a Masters of Divinity at Immaculate Conception Seminary. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday 10 AM at St. Catharine R.C. Church, 905 Maple Avenue, Glen Rock, with interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.

She retired as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1987 having worked for the International Ladies Garment Workers Unions in their Union Health Center located in New York for 20 years.
