'Narcos: Mexico's' José María Yazpik Found Amado's Romance 'Weird' To Portray in Season 3

Narcos: Mexico may focus on country's the drug lords and their rise and fall from power, but that's not all the show is about.

To show the characters are not just power-hungry criminals, the Netflix crime drama also depicts their personal lives, with Season 3 paying particular attention to Amado Carrillo Fuentes' romance with Cuban singer Marta (Yessica Borroto Perryman).

And José María Yazpik admitted to Newsweek that he initially found it "weird" to be exploring a softer side to his character, but felt they approached it in a "well balanced" enough way that it wasn't too over-the-top.

"It felt weird," he said. "I mean the past seasons you also saw the main characters dive into their relationships etc. But it's well known that Amado Carrillo was somewhat of a ladies' man, especially when he was living here in Mexico City.

"It's weird, it feels weird because you don't want an action-packed, socially demanding role to go into the melodramatic kind of... state.

"But I think it's very well balanced. After the first reads of the [scripts] it just felt natural to do so."

María Yazpik has portrayed the character of Amado since Season 3 of Narcos, and he is the only actor from the main Narcos: Mexico cast to have appeared in its predecessor.

Reaching the end of his journey

The real-life drug lord became known as the "Lord of the Skies" and was one of the world's most successful drug lords when he took over the Juárez Cartel after assassinating the previous boss Rafael Aguilar Guajardo.

He died in 1997 on the operating table when he tried to get plastic surgery to change his appearance so that he could evade police.

Reflecting on his character's journey in the show, and reaching its end in Season 3, the actor said: "It was great to dive into this character more emotionally than physically.

"It is more of an existential road that Amado takes in this last season which, for an actor, is a gift because you don't only get to do the action scenes, and what's on top, you also get to work with layering which is always better for us.

"And to see character all the way through, it's a bittersweet experience. I feel sad because its over but I am grateful and I had a lot of fun and I just hope that the people will enjoy the season, that everyone will enjoy it."
