Notes

151 records

Muller classified this species in his ‘spinifera group’. Poulsen (1973) classified it in Claus’s genus Paraconchoecia, which he resurrected. Müller (1906) had been unable to differentiate the females of this species from P. oblonga, nor was Poulsen able to describe the females. The recorded latitudinal range of this species is 28°N to 40°S. It is a shallow mesopelagic species, which undertakes limited diel vertical migrations. Hartmann (1963) described a new species Conchoecia schwabenlandiae from the Southern Ocean, which has been synonymized with this species (Martens, 1979), although a direct comparison has not been undertaken between Atlantic material and the specimens from Chile available to Martens. Otherwise this species is very similar to oblonga form A and can be easily confused with it. In the Atlantic it is confined to the tropical and subtropical waters.
