Shell medium-sized, transversely elongate, elliptical, and bilaterally compressed, thick and solid; both valves inflated and wide. Surface with yellowish-brown background color; irregular spots forming bands, and stretching from umbo to ventral margin. Sculpture of regular and closely-spaced, smooth, concentric ribs; becoming roughened on antero- and postero-dorsal margins. Postero-dorsal margin moderately extended, oblique; posterior margin rounded; antero-dorsal margin straight and oblique, shorter than posterior. Umbones situated slightly anterior of midline of valves, slightly protruding, and prosogyrate. Lunule brown, narrowly-ovate; escutcheon lanceolate Ligament brown, cylindrical,and slightly protruding. Interior umbonal cavity relatively shallow; and yellowish-white, glossy. Hinge plate relatively narrow, with three small cardinal teeth in both valves; median and posterior cardinal teeth bifid; lateral teeth absent. Interior yellowish-white, slightly glossy. Anterior and posterior adductor scars ovate, and similar in size. Pallial sinus deep and rounded, not reaching central region of valves. Inner ventral margin thick, smooth, and glossy. Umbones located anterior of midline of valves, prosogyrate. Lunule and escutcheon distinct or indistinct. Surface dark brown with streaks and concentric lines. Interior glossy, purplish. Hinge plate narrow, with three cardinal teeth. At present, there are three living species known worldwide in Paratapes.
