Former Rutgers star Mohamed Sanu is returning to the Garden State for a limited, two-game engagement.

The San Francisco 49ers signed Sanu last week and he made his debut for the defending NFC Champions in the 31-13 win over the New York Jets. He saw the field for 13 snaps, which was 21% of the team’s 61 offensive plays. During his time in the huddle, Sanu was not targeted in the passing game.

Sanu will look to do better in his second game with the 49ers, which also comes in the Garden State, as the New York Giants host San Francisco in Week 3.

Sanu and the 49ers team are a team in disarray following Sunday’s win over the Jets. Defensive ends Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas left the games with suspected torn ACLs, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a high-ankle sprain and running back Raheem Mostert went down with a sprained knee. All of those injuries have the 49ers concerned about the turf at MetLife Stadium.

One bit of good news for the 49ers: they should have All-Pro tight end George Kittle back in uniform for Week 3. He missed San Francisco’s Week 2 win with a sprained left knee.

Since the 49ers are playing back-to-back games in East Rutherford, the team is spending the week on the East Coast, setting up shop at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

As for Sanu, he landed with the 49ers after being released by the Patriots on Sept. 2. He spent less than a year in New England, after being traded by the Atlanta Falcons last season for a second-round draft pick. Sanu ended up playing just eight games for the Patriots after suffering a high-ankle sprain last season.

The South Brunswick native has 403 receptions for 4,507 career receiving yards, 223 rushing yards and 28 total touchdowns over eight years after being picked in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sanu was an All-Big East pick for Rutgers in 2011.
