Burlington Northern Santa Fe chairman Matthew K. Rose addressed the state of the railroad industry last week.  He was a keynote speaker at the Montana Energy Conference on Wednesday.

The conference was held at the Radisson Hotel in Billings.  There were 12 keynote speeches over the 3-day event dealing with the fossil-fuel and renewable energy industry.

Rose said his business has hit a low not seen since the Great Depression.  At a time when fuel prices and demand are down, there are several railroad employees furloughed nationwide.

Prior to becoming BNSF executive chairman, Rose served as Chairman and CEO from 2002-2013.  In 2010, Railway Age named him Railroader of the Year.

Overall, Rose has been with BNSF since 1993.  He previously worked for transportation companies like Triple Crown Services and Schneider National and International Utilities.

Rose has been on the Board of Directors for AMR Corporation, AT&T, the Association of American Railroads, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  He originally graduated with a bachelor's degree in marketing from the University of Missouri.
