Few manufacturers have the art of making upscale-looking 17-inch (and even 18-inch) multimedia laptops down to a science like HP does. The formula apparently works, as the basic look and feel of this line hasn't changed much in the past several rounds of updates, and the HP's multimedia Pavilions still share notable features such as Altec Lansing speakers, HDMI outputs, and touch-sensitive media control buttons, along with mirror-finish accents. HP makes excellent, slick multimedia machines, such as the Pavilion dv7-2185DX, but we'd still trade its quad-core CPU for a full HD 1080p display and Blu-ray.

The HP Pavilion dv7-1451nr is the more affordable ($799.98) sibling of the dv7-2170us, which costs $300 more. Externally, you can tell the systems apart by the economy model's more understated crosshatched, instead of artistically decorated, black lid and its silver instead of black keyboard, numeric keypad, palm rest, and speaker surround, though they have the same smudge-magnet chrome touchpad. Performance-wise, the difference between the systems bears out the old adage, "You get what you pay for." The older 17- as opposed to newer 17.3-inch incarnation of HP's desktop replacement offers fair value, but skimps on performance and luxuries.

Need a calculator to figure out whether a notebook's screen fits the newly fashionable 16:9 aspect ratio for high-def video and TV viewing? The HP Pavilion dv7-2170us ($1,099.98 list) makes it easy for you: The widebody's 17.3-inch display resolution is 1,600 by 900. That's not enough pixels for 1080p but is perfectly suited to 720p HD content. For over a grand, we would have liked to have seen Blu-ray and/or ultra-fast gaming graphics, but the HP Pavilion dv7-2170us is a stylish slab that's surprisingly attractive anyway.

Nothing on a notebook collects more smudgy fingerprints than its touchpad, so whoever specified a chrome touchpad for the HP Pavilion dv7 (2173cl) ($999 list) is guilty of sacrificing practicality for style. Other choices that went into this Costco configuration, however, make good sense—indeed, they make the 2173cl our favorite of the three Pavilion dv7 variants we've tested recently. A Blu-ray drive makes the HP Pavilion dv7 (2173cl) desktop replacement laptop a good pick for movie and multimedia buffs.

HP markets the Pavilion dv7-2180us as an entertainment laptop. This is certainly something that it is capable of but HP focused much more at general purpose performance. With the new quad core processor from Intel and 6GB of memory, this system should have no problem dealing with multitasking or processor intensive tasks like video editing. The downside is that the system is not quite as entertainment focused as it only comes with a DVD burner and a display that doesn't quite reach 1080p high definition resolutions.

The HP Pavilion dv6 is a midrange model from HP. Its multimedia capabilities suit it to a range of uses, from office applications and Web browsing to watching movies and viewing your holiday snaps. With its appealing visual design and very complete feature set on paper, the HP Pavilion dv6-1225ef look promising. Unfortunately, its disappointing performance, very poor battery life, and glossy, poor-quality display panel take away points.

With the vast majority of laptops on store shelves priced well below $1,000, it's almost startling to come across the HP Pavilion dv7-3080us. The huge, 17.3-inch laptop, available at Staples, carries a big price: $1,449 (list). The HP Pavilion dv7-3080us is a quad-core, 17.3-inch multimedia dynamo that makes few if any compromises on its way to carrying a reasonable price.

Big is beautiful, or so the old saying goes, but in the world of laptops a gargantuan frame often comes with a similarly giant price tag. HP's Pavilion dv7 doesn't conform to that stereotype, however. Generously proportioned and available for just £487, it promises a hell of a lot of laptop for surprisingly little outlay. HP's Pavilion dv7 is a hulking 17.3in desktop replacement with a miniature price tag.

This holiday season, the field of high-end laptops was redefined by the release of Intel's Core i7 processor, which offers improved next-generation multicore performance. While some of the initial Core i7 machines were quite expensive, the technology has already trickled down to more affordable laptops such as the HP dv7-3085dx. Equipped with a big screen and a fast Core i7 processor, the HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx is a speedy all-around Windows 7 laptop, but in this price range we expect either Blu-ray or faster gaming graphics.

The HP Pavilion dv7-2273cl, like the recent Pavilion dv7 models we have reviewed, is one of the best desktop replacements on the market with a well-designed chassis and stunning 17.3-inch display. But unlike its more affordable $800 HP Pavilion dv7-3063cl and HP Pavilion dv7-2270us siblings, the $999 dv7-2273cl has a Intel CPU, Blu-ray drive, and discrete ATI graphics. A head turning desktop replacement, the HP Pavilion dv7-2273cl has a gorgeous display and packs a Blu-ray drive for under a grand.

The HP Pavilion dv7-3180us ($1,449.98 list) is a high-end, quad-core desktop replacement. At $1,449 (list), it's likely the highest priced laptop you'll encounter at your local Staples.
The HP Pavilion dv7-3180us is a high-end desktop replacement that scores points for its quad-core processing, GeForce graphics, and Blu-ray drive. It's an excellent all-around performer, but dual-core Core i5-based laptops are nipping at its heels.

HP's Pavilion dv7-3180us gets a significant performance boost with the new Core i7 quad core mobile processor. This combined with the 6GB of memory allow this system to perform extremely fast is just about any task thrown at it. It is also nice to see HP including a Blu-ray drive for a mobile media platform as well. The system does have its downsides though including a graphics processor more suited to casual PC gaming and a display that can't handle the full 1080p HD video.

It would be silly to expect the HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx to have a great battery life; it's a monster laptop with a 17-inch LED-backlit LCD, 7,200rpm hard drive, and a discrete graphics chip. Still, with battery lives getting longer and longer, this dv7 does come up short on time away from a power outlet. The older AMD processor in the dv7 seems power hungry without providing a competitive multitasking performance kick. People who would rather have a big screen instead of great battery life will be happy with the HP dv7-3165dx.

When you see a laptop with a 17.3-inch widescreen, that's usually a tell-tale sign that it will stay fixed in one location and tethered to an outlet at all times, but the HP Pavilion dv7-4053cl ($829.99 list) is a desktop replacement laptop that refuses to go with the grain. The dv7-4053cl, sold at Costco, bundles a huge battery that delivered 7 hours of battery life in our tests, an encouraging sign for those who need a big screen laptop for the road. Furthermore, the included Blu-ray drive and quad-core AMD processor allows you to step into a world of high-def entertainment without breaking the bank. Just one thing, though: Make sure you turn off the multitouch gestures before surfing with the touchpad.

The new brushed aluminum exterior gives it a nicer feel but it is the terabyte of storage space, Blu-ray drive and improved ATI graphics that make this system a good choice for just about any type of PC using. The biggest downside is the display panel that doesn't reach full 1080p resolutions but with a $1300 price tag that is a sacrifice many will accept.

Ever so recently, we reviewed the HP Envy 17-1050ea, a truly luxurious machine that offers a rather spiffy design and more grunt than a grizzled old oil-rig worker. The 17.3-inch HP Pavilion dv7-4050ea laptop offers a swell design and decent performance. It's a shame about its terrible battery life, but, all things considered, this is a decent machine.

The HP Pavilion dv7 series regularly evolves and continues to improve. This new model, the dv7-4055sf has an entry-level positioning. The new HP Pavilion dv7-4055sf sets its stall out by its ease-of-use. This computer will be worth looking at for mainly office doc and internet usage, or for viewing photos and video. For the rest, performance is too limited.

HP's Pavilion dv7-4170us certainly succeeds on being an affordable 17-inch laptop but the system suffers a number of feature drops compared to the Intel version that its overall value is diminished. It still retains the same aluminum exterior and long battery life but it lacks the Blu-ray drive and graphics capabilities make it less useful for HD media or games.

Although the new parts only delivered moderate performance gains in our tests, more sophisticated users might find better use for the highest clocked Core i5 processor and 8GB of memory. I would call the HP Pavilion dv7-4283cl is a leading contender in the desktop replacement category because it delivered excellent battery life and good performance scores, but it didn't take a big enough leap to dethrone the Dell XPS 15.

Inexpensive entertainer. HP's dv7-6101eg is a powerful 17-inch notebook, which will appeal to multimedia fans and also occasional gamers, thanks to its Blu-Ray drive and decent graphics card. The HP Pavilion dv7 QE is a sleek, sexy, and relatively lightweight desktop replacement. The only problem: It's a desktop replacement. And for desktop replacements, prettiness and portability aren't exactly the most important features--performance is. That said, the dv7 QE performs pretty well and has lots of upgrades (a Blu-ray player, USB 3.0 ports, 8GB of RAM), so if you're in the very small percentage of people who are looking for an attractive, portable desktop replacement, look no further.

Multimedia headquarters. The Pavilion dv7-6b02eg has everything that can be expected from a well-equipped multimedia notebook. In addition to a quad core processor and a top of the range, DirectX 11 graphics card, a solid state drive and a BluRay burner are under the hood. Another highlight is the matt Full HD screen. Is the price of €1300 justified?

Refreshed. HP has improved its multimedia laptop, the Pavilion dv7, by adding a graphic card from the new AMD Radeon HD 7000M series. This high-performance desktop replacement (DTR) laptop has a few weaknesses, but its great price-to-performance ratio is guaranteed to entice buyers.

For less than 1000 euros the HP Pavilion dv7 laptop is a very capable multimedia or gaming outfit. It slightly suspect keyboard and mouse buttons disqualify it from serious office use, but only ultra-hardcore gamers could be disappointed in its performance. We strongly recommend upgrading to the HD version. Pick up hp vouchers before you make your purchase.

HP: Founded in 1939, the US company is a major server and printer manufacturer and one of the leading IT companies in the world. Until 2015, the company was called Hewlett-Packard Company. After a split, the computer division was renamed HP Inc.
In 2023, HP had an approximate market share of 22% of global PC sales, making it number 2 after Lenovo.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: The Mobility HD 4650 is based on the Desktop 4650 architecture, but features a lower clock rate of memory and core. Depending on the core clock (450-550MHz possible) and the used memory (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 with 600-800 MHz possible) the mobile 4650 can show a different performance. The current consumption of the chip alone ranges from 15-25W. Features Avivo HD video features.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M: The GeForce GT 230M features 48 shader cores as the 9700M GTS but only a 64 bit memory bus. Because of the 40nm process the power consumption is in the region of the GT 130M.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middle class DirectX 11 capable graphics card with a power consumption of about 15-20 Watt. Supports Eyevision (up to 6 monitors)
AMD Radeon HD 6650M: Successor of the Mobility Radeon HD 5650 with more cores, UVD3 processor and Eyefinity+. Due to the same codename, the 6650M should be a HD 6750M with slow DDR3 memory.
AMD Radeon HD 6620G + HD 7450M Dual Graphics: Dual Graphics (asymmetrical CrossFire) combination of a dedicated Radeon HD 7450M and a 6620G processor graphics card (in the processor core of the A-Series). Only in some cases faster than the dedicated GPU alone and furthermore it sometimes suffers from micro stuttering.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Radeon HD 3200: Onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip (on RS780M chipset) based on the HD 2400 graphics core. It also features the UVD video engine to decode HD videos. Beware: Under Windows XP the HD 3200 may have no 2D accelleration because of a driver problem.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530: About 27% slower clocked Mobility Radeon 4570. Power consumption 8-12 Watt according to AMD.
NVIDIA GeForce G 105M: Higher clocked 9300M GS and therefore a bit faster. Still manufactured in 65nm. Supports Hybrid-SLI with HybridPower and GeForceBoost (in conjunction with the right Nvidia chipset).
ATI Radeon HD 4200: Onboard graphics adapter (RS880M chipset) with UVD2 (PIP support) and DX 10.1 support (compared to the older HD 3200). Beware, possibly no 2D acelleration in Windows XP (as the HD3200).
NVIDIA GeForce GT 320M: The GT320M was presented in the HP dv6t and dv7t series and is based on a stripped down GT216 with only 24 shaders.
ATI Radeon HD 4250: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) for AMD processors with Avivo HD support and technically a higher clocked HD 4200.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570: Lower middle-class GPU that features a low shader count and a 64 Bit memory bus but a high clock speed. Similar to the desktop Radeon 4550. Supports Avivo HD and DirectX 10.1.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470: Entry level DirectX 11 chip with GDDR5 support but only 80 shader cores. Supports Eyefinity (up to 4 monitors) and 8-ch HD audio over HDMI. Performance on par with the old GeForce 8600M GT.
AMD Radeon HD 6370M: Renamed old HD 5470 with 80 shader processors and DirectX11 support.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
AMD Radeon HD 6770M:
Fastest card of the 6600M/6700M series with GDDR5 memory, UVD3 and Eyefinity+ support. Is the immediate successor to the HD 5770 with more cores and higher clock rates
AMD Radeon HD 7690M XT: Renamed Radeon HD 6770M and therefore faster than the similar called 7690M (without XT) which is based on the 6750M.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M:
Multiple models based on various chips of the Fermi generation. Specifically, the GT 630M exists in GF108/GF106/GF116 variants, but are all essentially renamed GeForce GT 540M or 555M GPUs. A 28nm GF117 variant exists as well with reduced power consumption.

Intel Core 2 Quad: Mobile version of the desktop Quad Core processor. Due to low clock rates it is not recommended for most applications.
Q9000:
Slow clocked quad core CPU (4 cores) that suffers especially in many games from the low clock speed. Therefore, not suited for games and only for highly multi threaded applications.
AMD Turion X2: The Turion X2 (without 64) is based on the Turion X2 Ultra, but has only 1024 MB L2 Cache and is therefore slower (performance compareable to the old Turion 64 X2). Because of new parts from the K10 architecture, the CPU should be more energy efficient.
RM-75:
Griffin based entry-level dual core processor. The cores are still based on the old K8 architecture (memory controller is newer).
AMD Turion X2 Ultra: The AMD Turion X2 Ultra is part of the Puma platform and a mixture of the old K9 core (form the Turion 64 X2) and some parts of the K10 architecture (memorycontroller, hypertransport, crossbar switch from the Phenom). Because of the increased L2 cache ("Ultra" CPUs) and the improved memory controller, the performance increased a bit. Still a similar clocked Core 2 Duo is noticably faster.
ZM-82:
Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo.
ZM-84:
Mixture out of two K8 based cores and K10 uncores (e.g. memory controller). Offers improved power saving functions compared to older Turion CPUs but still not as good and fast as a Core 2 Duo. The ZM-84 is similar to the ZM-85 but features a slower clocked HT link.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

X9000: Fastest and most expensive mobile Core 2 CPU at the time of announcement with a higher power consumption of 44 W and 2.8 GHz core clock. Later the X9100 substituted the X9000 as fastest dual core.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

17.00: This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
0.7 kg:
3.8 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
74.84%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
