Colin Firth and his wife are on good terms, despite the off-screen drama swirling around their marriage.
The actor and his longtime spouse, Livia Giuggioli, recently revealed that they privately separated several years ago, and that Giuggioli had an affair during their break with a man she now accuses of stalking her.
Firth, 57, and Giuggioli, 48, have since worked out their issues and are happily married, People reported.
“These two have a solid commitment, are on the same level, and worked through it,” a source told the magazine. “They got back together, and things are fine. They have a good marriage.”
The couple confirmed Giuggioli’s past romantic involvement with Italian journalist Mario Brancaccia last week after Brancaccia contended to British newspaper The Times that Giuggioli had made up a harassment claim against him to cover up their former relationship.
Firth and Giuggioli, meanwhile, confirmed in a statement that they had since reunited, and contended that Giuggioli’s romance with Brancaccia took place while they were separated.
“Subsequently, Mr. Brancaccia carried out a frightening campaign of harassment over several months, much of which is documented,” Firth’s rep said in a statement to the Daily News last week. “As a consequence of his stalking, threats and refusal to desist, the legal complaint was lodged with the Italian authorities.”
Brancaccia, who told The Times his relationship with Giuggioli took place between 2015 and 2016, scoffed at the stalking allegation.
“My ‘stalking’ consisted of two messages via WhatsApp after she ended our relationship in June 2016, and an email,” Brancaccia told the newspaper. “I wrote an email to Colin about my relationship with Livia, which I now regret sending, and she filed a complaint against me for stalking out of fear that I could go public with what she had revealed to me about her marriage and work.”
Brancaccia — who works for Italian news agency ANSA — reiterated this denial to People, and told the magazine he submitted a counterclaim against Giuggioli after finding out about her accusation against him last year.
“We would try and see each other as often as we could as it was a real love affair, for the two of us,” he told People, noting their romance lasted 11 months.
Prosecutors in Italy, meanwhile, have requested to indict Brancaccia, ANSA reported.
Firth and Giuggioli have been married since 1997 and have a pair of teenage sons together.
