Portrait of John Liu

John Liu

I am a reporter and researcher, covering China and technology for The New York Times. I focus primarily on the interplay between politics and technology supply chains. I am based in Seoul.

What I Cover

I write largely about the semiconductor industry and its associated supply chain companies in China and Taiwan. I delve into how these entities navigate the tightening restrictions amid escalating tensions between the United States and China. Beyond individual companies, my work explores state-led initiatives in related policy-making.

I also have a keen interest in the convergence of technology, politics and society. My coverage extends to topics such as Chinese censorship and propaganda mechanisms, as well as reporting on the technological surveillance apparatus within the country. Additionally, I closely follow disinformation campaigns and cognitive warfare.

My Background

I joined The Times in 2021. Previously, I worked as a freelance journalist covering Taiwan and Myanmar, including Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, for various international media outlets. I started as a reporter for the now defunct Myanmar Times based in Yangon, covering the country’s business environment, relations with China and its 2020 General Elections.

I’m a native of Taipei, Taiwan, and a graduate of the University of Hong Kong.

Journalistic Ethics

All Times journalists are committed to upholding the standards of integrity outlined in our Ethical Journalism Handbook. This means I strive to be accurate, meticulous and fair in my work. I endeavor to give voice to the voiceless and offer relevant parties the opportunity to respond prior to publication. I do not engage in campaigning for or donating to political candidates. Last but not least, I am committed to protecting my sources. If you wish to share a tip confidentially, please use the contact information provided below.
