Biography: Achieved recognition in a supporting role in the independent cult film, "Donnie Darko" (2001) opposite her brother the actor Jake Gyllenhaal, before her breakthrough role in the sadomasochistic romance, "Secretary" (2002), for which she received critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination.

Gyllenhaal has gone on to star in numerous films including Spike Jonze's "Adaptation" (2002) and Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" (2008). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress opposite Jeff Bridges in "Crazy Heart".

In recent years Gyllenhaal has achieved considerable success on television. She won a Golden Globe for the BBC's "The Honourable Woman" (2014) and was nominated for an Emmy. In "The Deuce" for HBO she both produces and stars.
