Don’t overlook this precious little gem! Part of our collection of wearable orchids, Paph. thaianum is an adorable, relatively new, micro-miniature, species from the west coast of Thailand. It is the smallest of the genus with a leaf span of 3 – 4 inches (4 – 10 cm) when fully mature. These amazing, seed-grown, plants originate from a sibling cross of two excellent clones—both have very round and nicely spotted flowers, from the breeding program of Hung Sheng Orchids.
The attractive foliage has dark mottling on its soft green leaves that is purple on the underside. It flowers in the spring on an erect, up to 6-inch inflorescence. Its 1.5 – 2 inch (4 – 5 cm), pristine-white flowers are lightly stippled with maroon speckles; the pouch is spotted maroon internally, and perfectly finished with a green to yellow-green staminode. These plants do not need a winter cooling and prefer warm to hot temperatures year round. Growers in cold climates report success growing this species on a heat mat in the cooler months. Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. We grow this species alongside our novelty Phals and they love warm days and warm nights. Not commonly found in the market. An absolute must-have for any Paph. collection. Very Highly Recommended!
