A 1971 Impala two-door hardtop with checkered flag design. If the word "donk" sounds familiar, you've probably heard Miami rapper Pitbull reference it in his and Jennifer Lopez's 2011 dance hit, "On the Floor." He raps: "That badonka donk is like a trunk full of bass on an old school Chevy."

A 1975 Chevrolet Caprice convertible donk. Why are they called donks? No one knows for sure but at least one car editor said it's because the Impala symbol looked like a donkey, hence donk. Others say it's because of the big, low rear end-like of a donkey. And others say it comes from "dunk," as in a slam-dunk.

Donks are unmissable in South Florida. What are donks? They are tricked-out Chevy Impalas and Caprices from the 1970s that sparkle with their fitted or oversized rims.
Former Miami Heat NBA champ LeBron James was known to drive around South Florida in his purple donk, a convertible Impala. And more recently, there was a light blue Chevrolet Impala in the Academy-awarding winning movie, “Moonlight,” which was filmed throughout Miami. The car can be seen in the first third of the movie and is driven by the character of Juan, played by Mahershala Ali. Donks have also been featured in music videos.
Honk if you’ve spotted donks rolling around town or on TV.
