Phenakospermum guyanense

Mangosteen

Recommended Posts

Finally, after years of trying to germinate seed and get rhizomes to grow (all failures), I finally tracked down one of my Holy Grails, Phenakospermum guyanense.

Plant Group Hawaii had a good size plant for sale. Its now growing on my property in Pepeekeo, just north of Hilo on the Big Island.

So is the difference between this one and a regular Traveller's Palm color?

Flowers have a completely different look. Phenakospermum guyanense has a tall stalk that shoots out the top of the plant that the flowers grow out of.

Its just so strange that it's relatives, Strelitzia and Ravenala originate from areas on the other side of the world (South Africa and Madagascar, respectively).

How the heck did Phenakospermum guyanense originate way over in South America?

South America and Africa were in ancient past part of the same landmass.
