The Endangered and Protected Rare Palos Verdes Butterfly

Palos Verdes blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus palosverdesensis)

When was the last time that you saw the rare and irreplaceable Palos Verdes Blue Butterfly?  Chances are you may not have ever seen it and if you haven't been to Palos Verdes you definitely never have.

Glaucopsyche lygdamus palosverdesensis can only be found locally and isn't easy to find anyway.  It is rare, localized, elusive, special, beautiful and rare just as the Palos Verdes Peninsula is.  It is in fact so rare that it was thought to be extinct for many years.  Most local residents have probably never seen it in person as well but revel in the joy of knowing it exists among us.

You can only imagine the joy that nature lovers, naturalists, environmentalists and others experienced during the rediscovery in 1994.

Today efforts are underway to restore the land and maintain a healthy environment to support the beautiful butterfly species and the land as well.

The Palos Verdes butterfly is a perfect representation of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Rare, beautiful, worth preserving and visiting.
