Inter-Parliamentary Union

The IPU is the global organisation of national parliaments. It was founded in 1889 as an association of MPs - the Inter-Parliamentary Conference - and then renamed the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1899.

The IPU is made up of 180 Member Parliaments and has 15 Associate Members.

The IPU states that it "facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world." 

There is a NZ IPU Group within the New Zealand Parliament.

The IPU has headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and holds two Assemblies each year. These are in Geneva or hosted by Member Parliaments. There were 142 Member Parliaments at the 148th Assembly, 10 Associate Members and 32 Observers. Over 700 parliamentarians, and a total of 1480 persons, attended this Assembly,

The Assemblies cover a wide range of social and political issues, promoting peace, democracy and sustainable development. Each Assembly may decide on an emergency resolution pertaining to an immediate global issue. There are forums at the Assemblies for women and young parliamentarians, and committees such as the human rights of parliamentarians and United Nations Affairs.

New Zealand belongs to two geopolitical groups at the Assemblies - the 12 Plus, with 47 members and the Asia-Pacific, with 36 members.

The 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was held in Geneva, Switzerland from 23 to 27 March 2024. The New Zealand delegation comprised Stuart Smith (Head of Delegation), Tangi Utikere MP and Kahurangi Carter MP. The theme of the Assembly was “Parliamentary diplomacy: Building bridges for peace and understanding.”  At the end of the Assembly, the IPU leadership made "an urgent political statement on behalf of the global parliamentary community":
