Demetrius Calip, a guard on Michigan’s 1989 National Championship basketball team, has died.

He was 53.

Not cause of death was given.

Calip’s son, Demetrius II, posted about his father’s death on Instagram writing, “Dad. 2/5/23. Love you forever. He was the perfect example of a great dad and I can only be grateful and happy.”

Calip was a Michigan native who played for the Wolverines from 1987-1991.

Calip was a reserve his first two season with the team, served a key role off the bench for the title team, and led the team in scoring with 20.5 points per game as a senior.

He played seven games with the Lakers following his college career and spent time in the CBA.

“Rest Easy Demetrius, rest easy,” Michigan Men’s Basketball posted on Twitter.
