Identification & Behavior: ~23.5 cm (9.2 in). The Peruvian Tern is light gray below and bluish-gray above. It has a dusky culmen and tip, with the rest of the bill yellow. The yellow and dusky bill and yellow feet do not change in basic and alternate plumages. It is very similar to the Least Tern but is distinguished by the bill coloration, and by having light gray underparts.
Status: The Peruvian Tern is uncommon to rare along the coast of Peru. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Ch.
Name in Spanish: Gaviotín Peruano.
Sub-species: Peruvian Tern (Sternula lorata), R. A. Philippi and Landbeck 1861.
Meaning of Name: Sternula: Gr. diminutive of Sterna. lorata: In honor of Lamberto Loria, Italian ethnologist and collector.
