Morphological Characteristics

Colonies free floating, microscopic, gelatinous, subspherical, elongate or irregular, with irregularly and more or less densely aggregated cells; mucilage fine, usually wide, colourless, homogeneous, with a more or less visible, difluent margin. Cells widely oval or shortly rod-shaped, pale blue-green, yellowish green or greyish, with homogeneous content, without gas vesicles.

  • Diameter of colony: up to 140 µm
Distribution
Freshwater, planktonic in lakes, ponds and pools; central to subpolar regions of temperate zones.
