Species details
The cells may be solitary or joined in straight colonies of varying length. In girdle view the valves have slightly rounded margins due to the presence of small protuberances from which thin, spine-like structures emanate, enabling two adjacent cells to bind to each other. At the base of each protuberance the valve is perforated by small slits, rarely visible by optical microscope. The space between two cells is narrow. There is a central labiate process. The cylindrical cells have a thin, slightly silicified wall. There are numerous small chloroplasts distributed throughout the cytoplasm.
